In 2022, Gunslinger and Tiki Plymouth store manager ‘Cowboy Dan’ launched an ambitious new event. A three-week celebration of the rebelliousness of surf culture, served with a side of silliness. An event to strengthen the bonds between the Plymouth Surf Society and Tiki Store in Plymouth. And so, the Holy whale was born.
Inspired by events such as ‘King of the Road’ created by Thrasher. The Holy Whale challenges participants in the three critical categories of - surfing, skating, and sending it. The event runs over the period of 2-4 weeks, with teams of between 4-8 people willing to put their body on the line for eternal glory. Winners get not only bragging rights, but the coveted‘cool cobra’ trophy, sourced at a black market in Bali many moons ago.

After the big ol’ holy whale launch party, we get all participants to sign a waiver. Rules aren’t on the top of the agenda but unfortunately, they are needed to keep the structure of the event and to ensure that people complete the challenges to a certain standard.
Some challenge favourites are... Best short board wave, Best wipeout, Surf a wave naked, Gnarliest hill bomb, Barefoot kickflip, Craziest haircut, Best prank on another team.
All challenges must be filmed and sent to Dan for assessment. Having run the event four times now, we are always looking of ways to improve it and build on the fun. This year, we decided to bring in a playoff situation, where the bottom 2 teams were kicked out every 5 days. This made every team fully engage to ensure they made it to the finale.
At the end of the event, we throw another big party we get a show the footage and present the prizes they have submitted in an edit format and give prizes for - 1st place team, MVP, best surfer, best skater, best slam.
Congratulations to this years winners – Lingerie Lickers & Sniffers
